Born on September 8, 1925, in Files Valley, Texas, to Lorenzo M. Guajardo and Eduvijes Trevino Guajardo, Rose’s life story is one of unwavering love, boundless compassion, and remarkable resilience.
Rose’s journey began in the heart of Texas, where she spent her formative years in Houston’s West University Place before eventually settling in San Antonio, specifically Alamo Heights. Her last 12 years were spent in San Antonio, a deliberate choice to remain close to her cherished daughters, Olga Gately and Sylvia Jaye.
Throughout her life, Rose exemplified the true essence of love and dedication, touching the lives of those around her with her kindness and generosity. Her devotion to her family was unparalleled, and she found joy in creating a warm and nurturing home for her loved ones.
Rose’s life was marked by a deep commitment to service and community. Her professional journey spanned three decades in retail sales, during which she shared her warmth and compassion with countless individuals. Following the passing of her beloved husband, Sixto Obregon, in July 1984, Rose found solace in her work at MD Anderson Rotary House, where she served in a gift shop for an impressive 18 years before retiring in 2010 at the remarkable age of 85.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Rose dedicated herself to volunteer work, particularly in assisting the elderly with tasks such as writing letters, accompanying them to appointments, and grocery shopping. Her selfless acts of kindness left an indelible mark on the community, embodying the true spirit of compassion and empathy.
Rose’s resilience and strength were evident in her unwavering determination to overcome life’s challenges. Despite facing health setbacks, including a heart attack in 2008 and a courageous battle with breast cancer in 2015, Rose approached each obstacle with grace and fortitude, inspiring all who knew her with her unwavering spirit.
In addition to her professional and volunteer work, Rose played an integral role in her husband’s jewelry store, contributing her time and talents to the family business from 1956 to 1974 and later from 1980 to 1984. Her dedication and commitment were instrumental in the success of the establishment, reflecting her unwavering work ethic and passion for excellence.
Throughout her life, Rose cherished the relationships she formed with friends and colleagues, finding joy in the simple moments shared with loved ones. Her friendships at The Village of Incarnate Word Retirement Center, particularly with Tina Hatch and her devoted caregiver, Katie Galvez, brought her immense happiness and companionship in her later years.
Rose’s legacy lives on through her five children: Olga and Mike Gately of San Antonio, George and Virginia Obregon of San Jose, California, Sylvia and Keith Jaye of San Antonio, David Obregon of San Antonio, and Rebecca Obregon of Galveston. Additionally, she is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Andrew and Kevin (Landrie Moore) Gately of Austin, Texas, and Marissa Smith of Oregon, as well as her great-grandchild, Judd Grey Gately of Austin, Texas.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and caregivers who provided compassionate care to Rose during her time in Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Long Term Care/Hospice. Their dedication and support brought comfort to Rose and her family during challenging times.
In honor of Rose’s memory, donations may be made to The Village of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, a testament to her enduring legacy of love and compassion.
Funeral services will be held on March 8th at The Village at Incarnate Word Retirement Center, followed by a service at St. Joseph’s Church and a reception. Rose will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Houston, Texas, alongside her beloved husband, Sixto Obregon.
Rose’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love, resilience, and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her unwavering kindness, boundless generosity, and profound impact on the lives of those around her.
