However, in the early 1980s, Gloria’s life took a positive turn when she moved to a smaller group home in Gardiner, Maine. This transition marked the beginning of her journey towards independence and personal growth. Gloria thrived in this new environment, where she had the opportunity to develop lasting relationships and pursue new experiences.
Later on, Gloria moved to the Uplift home in Winthrop, Maine, where she continued to flourish. She formed deep connections with her housemates and caregivers, including her dear friend Melissa Savage. Gloria’s time at the Uplift home was filled with adventures and fond memories, and she cherished the love and support she received from those around her.
In 1997, Tim Piper-Martin entered Gloria’s life and became a source of love and support for her. Alongside her parents, Tim ensured that Gloria had all the opportunities she deserved to live her best life. After the passing of her parents, Gloria’s sisters stepped in to provide love and care, ensuring that she continued to experience happiness and joy.
With the closure of Westwind House, Gloria moved in with Tim and his husband David, where she spent her remaining years in a loving and supportive home environment. Gloria embraced life to the fullest, enjoying adventures with Tim, David, their families, and friends. She formed new friendships and cherished the time she spent with her loved ones.
Throughout her life, Gloria enjoyed attending day programs, participating in the Special Olympics, and creating crafts. She had a passion for music and cherished her collection of songs and special treasures. Gloria is survived and deeply missed by her much-loved sisters: Donna Parkinson, Anita Leeman, Teresa Leeman, and Mary Colcord.
